What do we like about goats?

Although raising livestock is not always easy and takes a lot of time and money, we enjoy the goats for their size, personalities, and the people we meet while doing it! I think it's a great way to raise a family and teach kids responsibility, work ethic and about where their food comes from. We also enjoy the time spent as a family at shows or travel involving goats.

What kind of setup do we use?

We milk twice a day with a 12-place stand. We have a vacuum line but do milk into a bucket.
We feed milk replacer twice a day to most kids but do allow some to dam raise if they will be sold as meat kids.

How much milk do we get and what do we do with all of it?

We produce an estimated 45,000 pounds of milk per year.

We did have a small commercial dairy for about 12 years, selling milk to an artisan cheese plant. After the cheesemaker retired and we lost that market, we were looking for a way to use some of our milk and began making caramel. We sell it mainly at vendor/craft fairs and by word of mouth. We make four flavors; Vanilla, cinnamon, coffee and bourbon under the name Saucy Goat Caramel. In addition to making caramel, we sell a majority of our milk to a farm that raises dairy buck kids for market. We also sell raw milk off the farm for drinking.
